Feb. 20, 1915 — Jan. 9, 2004 Marie J. Bessey of Prineville died Friday of natural causes. She was 88. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13 at Deschutes Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Bessey was born Feb. 20, 1915, in Napa, Calif., to Richard and Alvaretta (Wertz) Hyland. She grew up in the Albany/Lebanon area. She moved to Central Oregon in 1944, settling in the Sisters area and later moving to Prineville. Mrs. Bessey served as a volunteer at the Bowman Museum, where she built scrapbooks. She was a member of the Powell Butte Christian Church and enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping. She was also an avid rockhound. Survivors include her two sons, LeeRoy Salsberry of Prineville and David Hilldebrand of Albany; two stepsons, Floyd of Ontario and Roy of Terrebonne; a brother, Carl Engstrom of Albany; 17 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, her parents, five siblings, and two granddaughters. Memorial contributions may be made to Pioneer Memorial Hospice, 1201 NE Elm St., Prineville 97754. Prineville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
