Thanks, Don, for letting us know of the sad passing of our friend. While ourselves not actually related, Cecil and I each shared a relationship to Grace McHargue, so I had considered him one of my favorite "non-cousins". His acerbic postings and his tireless genealogical research and help will be sorely missed on the several Oregon lists. Our sincere condolences to Rachel and other family members. Enter Maude Smelser in the search slot. Four data bases will come up. Maude Smelser was married to my Ephraim Piatt. The person with the connection (I met her in Salt Lake City) is “Love2climb”. I’m sure the others data bases are similar. Also Linn County Genealogy page has cemetery listings that have some of the Smelser family mentioned. Hope this helps Irene

Nathaniel's claim was located just outside Scio on Crabtree Creek, which doesn't seem large enough to provide hydro-power for a mill. I suspect that a mill would have been located near the current bridge in the present town of Scio. That location seems ideal for damming and mill operations. Nathaniel was a member of the Oddfellows and arrived in Oregon in August of I852. I'd appreciate any feedback on this mill. John Eielson McCartney, Seattle
