It said there 1st marriage was 1911. I found a C.A. Engstrom that married a L. East in Linn County 03 October 1910. Then I found a Laura Engstom that died in Linn County 21 July, 1912. Plus on the 1920 census there was a Richard Hyland as a step son. I think it was a 2nd marriage for them both. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:3268331&id=I62234 Waverly Memorial Cemetery Albany, Linn County, Oregon Engstrom, Carl A., b. 6 Nov 1886, d. 16 Jul 1965 Engstrom, Reta A., b. 25 Jan 1894, d. 9 Oct 1987 Hyland, Richard Kenneth, b. 12 Feb 1912, d. 21 Feb 1950, "Beloved husband of Katharine"

You were looking for marriage info in Oregon so it was only natural that she would ask you the question she did, even tho' she said it was a long shot. There are many very helpful researchers with Oregon info or access to Oregon records, but I'm sure none of them or anyone else would be interested in responding to someone who would snap at another researcher the way you did to Mary. Shame on you!!!!! Don Houk in Tokyo

The UW library has a copy of the book. I'll look up the interview you mention. Nathaniel McCartney would have had his mill in the early 1850s, somewhere in the Scio area. I'm just wondering if it was near his property on Crabtree Creek or on the larger waterway in present Scio. Looking at some historic mill images, it seems Crabtree Creek may have been large enough to sustain a mill operation. Nathaniel's mill was sold for $600 after his death on 7 JUN 1856. But I haven't yet determined who purchased it. John McCartney

The mill was a flax seed mill. They raised a lot of seed in that part of the country. I guess they had a dam on the creek with a couple of head gate for the millrace. The millrace also provided electricity for the town. He stated that they would turn on the electricity at night. We have to remember back in those day they didn't have the modern convience we have today. I hope this is of some help. The name of the book is Scio In the forks of the Santiam by Carol Bates. You may beable to get it thru an interloan at your local library.

I hadn't run into it yet. Does anyone know the title of the John Densmore book? What I've noted so far is that Joab Powell Sr. handled Nathaniel McCartney's probate after he died 07 Jun 1856. In the 1860 census, Joab Powell Jr. listed his occupation as "miller." I've just learned that Nathaniel's father, William C McCartney, built the first mill in Sound Bend, Ind., in 1831. I guess mills were in the blood. John Eielson McCartney, Seattle
