Author: mighty76 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.linn/1470.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, thanks for all of your suggestions and replies. We have solved at least part of the mystery. Here is what we have figured out: Shutler was the first railroad station on the Condon branch south of Arlington. It takes its name from the large flat area some five miles south where an old wagon with the Peter Schuttler trademark broke down and was abandoned. Through the years, the wagon disintegrated, but the marker's sign, painted with good white lead paint, remained legible. In identifying areas, that place became known as Schuttler Flat. When the Union Pacific put up the station sign, they left out the "c" and one "t", leaving the spelling "Shutler." (This info is found on several different websites.) I also know this: the father of this particular individual is listed in 1870 census in Harrisburg in Western Oregon (single) and in Heppner in Eastern Oregon in 1880 census (married with children). So whether some or all of the children were born in Harrisburg or Shutler Flat or some of each I am not sure but at least I have figured out that the location of Shutler Flat has nothing to do with Harrisburg! And Shutler Flat in Eastern Oregon makes a lot of sense because the family continues to be found in later census reports in various Eastern Oregon counties and communities. Thanks again for your ideas and comments, it has helped my aunt and I tremendously. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She is buried in the Fox Valley Pioneer Cemetery in Lyons, Linn County, Oregon, next to her first husband, Lemuel Wiley. She is buried with the name Louise Ramsey, so evidently she remarried at some point and was using her middle name, Louise. I have confirmed all this through visit to the cemetery and also obtained her death certificate, showing parents. Where are Peter and Adelia buried? Any photos, etc.? 3. Hello everyone - Just wanted to tell the world how wonderful this list is. A few weeks ago I submitted a query regarding the PETERSON family who went to Linn County from what is now West Virginia. A gentleman half a world away who belongs to the list generously responded to my inquiry. I truly appreciated his help. I've told him, and I will tell this list, if there's anything I can do to help folks with West Virginia research, I'll do my darnedest! Joy S.

Author: rfschack Surnames: Shelton, Hunt, Capell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.linn/1478/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I visited Franklin Butte Cemetery, South of Scio, yesterday to get pictures of the grave of Mary E. Shelton Hunt, 1837-1904. While checking out the headstone I noticed that on the South side of the headstone there was the additional name of B. A. Capell, 1867-1904. Census records as late as 1880 do not show that Mary had any children. The Scio Museum Records indicate that Mary had purchased the 4 grave plot, and that Mary and B. A. are buried there. Does anyone have any idea as to who B. A. Capell is, and the significance of his burial with Mary? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. 3. Hi The Santiam News, 29 January 1904. Local. The news was received in the city Wednesday by Aunt Mary Hunt of the death of her nephew, Ben L. Capell, at Woodinville, Wash., who committed sucide by shooting himself through the head with a 30-30 calibre rifle. He was not a drinking man but on New Years day became slighty intoxicated and his friends joked him about it. He took the matter to heart and it is supposed brooded over it until he shot himself. He was 35 years old and has three brothers and one sister living in Callifornia. He was raised in California by Aunt Mary Hunt, and his death was a great shock to her. The remains were brought to Scio Thursday and interred in the Masonic Cemetery. I have a question for you, you said 'the Scio Museum Records indicate', does that mean there are records on the cemetery at the museum? The reason I ask is I'm just getting started on a book on Franklin Butte. You can e-mail direct at jerddunk@smt-net.com Jerry
