As for pioneers: Some came west, left and went home to the midwest or east because they could not tolerate pioneer living, missed the old place and got homesick, or just could not deal with the sparse population. You'll have to do your own investigative work...the authority date is the date of the donation land claim ACT (law) and is not specific to that transaction. My relations CARY (also spelled as CAREY) and SPLAWN lived in the same region (same township). Noah Shanks signed off as a testamentary evidence on the donation land claim of many of my ancestors which is why I immediately recognize that name at that location and time frame. you will probably find at least ONE of your other relations coming west due to gold being discovered in both CA and OR and the moderate climate of Oregon, too. I don't know if this is "my" Catherine, but I suppose it could be. Adam Shanks married Catherine Thomas- Adams on 16 Mar 1854 in Ray Co., Missouri. I see the Authority date is in 1850, so at that time she would have been an Adams still. There is no evidence I am aware of that she travelled west, and on the 1870 census she still appears in Knoxville, Ray Co., Missouri census records. She is age 67 at that point. It probably is a red herring, but it certainly keeps things interesting! Thanks again for checking. Elise, MN Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: phbadave Surnames: Shanks, Adams Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.linn/573.0.3.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Noah Shanks had a donation land claim of 320 acres. The info basically is this: MARY SHANKS, NOAH SHANKS State: OREGON Acres: 320 Issue Date: 3/8/1866 Land Office: Oregon City Authority: September 27, 1850: Oregon-Donation Act (grant) (99 Stat. 496) Document Numbers Document Nr.: 1328 Accession/Serial Nr.: OROCAA 001773 BLM Serial Nr.: OROCAA 001773 their claim was near my ancestors and located, basically, in Linn County at section 15, range 14-S, township 1-W on the Willamette Meridian. If you wish to convert TRS to lattitude and longitude consult me outside ancestry for help. I may be able to help you with a diagram or map of the general location. (old). Immediately to an adjacent side of the above claim, was another 320 acre claim made by the following, which may connect to your research: CATHARINE J ADAMS, H ALVIN ADAMS. Again, this, basically, is an adjacent parcel to the one showing above, same range and township but different section portions. The following had a claim at range 12S (so at least ten miles away very roughly) and also may connect to your Adams research: HULDAH ADAMS, PARMENAS ADAMS I glanced for others in Linn Co but nothing jumped out and screamed at me, however, there are other ADAMS claims in Lane County and other areas. Noah Shanks lived in vicinity of Crawfordsville and Brownsville (from memory) however I did not confirm this today..just memory. He signed as a witness to my ancestors claim...different surnames to above. They also came from Ray Co and their captain in their (my ancestors) train was Capt. Splawn.
