Sep 29 1893 issue Scio Tribune Guardian's sale The undersigned guardian of the minor heirs of Otto Serfling, deceased will on the 14th day of October, 1893, at the hour of 10 o'clock A.M. at the farm known as the Otto Serfling farm, about 4 miles southwest of Scio, sell at public auction, to the highest bidder, all of the personal property belonging to the minor heirs of said deceased, set apart by order of the county court, of Linn County, Oregon for the support of the said minor heirs, consisting of: 1 roan mare 6 years olds, 1 roan mare 7 years olds, 2 cows, 2 calves, 8 hogs, 20 sheep, a large amount of farming utensils, consisting of wagon, plows, harrows, harness, binder, mower and hay rake and all of the household furniture formerly belonging to said deceased. It is a sort of letter of instructions to his children, as its contents indicate, and was written the night of the tragedy. FROM YOUR FATHER, OTTO SERFLING I am sorry I am compelled to take my own life. It cannot be otherwise. That g__d__d w__, will not give me any peace. Please take good care of the little ones. I have left a will at W.R. Bilyeu's at Albany. J.A. Bilyeu will act as administrator. I am sorry for some of you, and not for others. As I have tesitfied in my will, I hope my friends will forgive me for my rash act. Bury me alongside your mother, in the place left for me. As for the g__d__d b__, I don't want her buried alongside of me. If there is a hell, Bob Ashby and that d__d w__e will get there. If anything happens, so not say I was insane, for I was in my right senses. Wid Bilyeu (W.R. Bilyeu) has some of the letters she has written to me, and there are some in my trousers. See that you get the money that I have loaned her to pay for some of the property. You will find an account in my book. Let John Bilyeu put the cattle into the straw stack. Let him have what hay he wants for about $10 a ton. Have a sale about the 15th of March. Sell everything there is. The farm I want sold as soon as convenient, I have made mention in my will. The crow bar lies in the fence corner where we quit trimming posts. I give George Serfling my watch and chain. She (Mrs. Serfling) had poison in the house ever since we had the first quarrel, and I think she put some in my broth before she left for Portland. Probably there is a great deal concerning this purely mercenary marriage that will never be known. May not a lesson to the living be gathered from the tragic ending of these two lives.

24 March 1999 Hello Linn Countyites, Researching KIRK, MICHAEL, and ROBE families in Linn Co. I'm looking for the parents of Anna (Kirk) Barr, who was b. in Tennessee (ca. 1820?), m. Jesse BARR in TN (he was born 18 Oct 1818, near Nashville), moved to Iowa, and came to Oregon from Iowa in 1853. They lived for a few years in the hills above Crawfordsville while Jesse worked for Richard Chism FINLEY at the mill. They bought the squatter rights of a man named DARBY in 1855 and moved onto his donation land claim. They had 10 children, who lived in the Sweet Home area. (this info. from vol. 1, p. 19, Pioneer Stories of Linn County, Oregon, collected by Leslie Haskin). Anna Kirk Barr is supposed to be a double cousin of Polly Ann Kirk Finley, wife of Richard Chism Finley. On my website, I have just posted biographies of three more families who were on the McCULLY wagon train from Henry Co., IA, to OR in 1852: McDONALD, O'DONALD and PLAMONDON. Associated names are: For McDONALD - BLODGETT, MOIST, SALTMARSH, McCULLY, GUMM, STARR, CRAWFORD. For O'DONALD - WEAVER, GEER, CROSS and FARLEY For PLAMONDON - SCOTT, PAPE, BARRETT The O'DONALD and PLAMONDON families stayed pretty much in OR; some of the McDONALD group eventually settled in eastern WA. As with the other biographies on the McCULLY Train page, I have given only abbreviated citations for the references. I will gladly pass along the complete citations to anyone who is interested.
