    3. Hi Cathy, Well, you know me -- you get the information to me one way or the other, and I'll see that it gets on the web for the Oregon Tombstone Transcription Project and the Linn County GenWeb page. While we're on the subject of cemeteries, now that the weather is nice, are there any Linn County cemeteries out there that folks would like to see next? Those of us who live here and are out surveying these cemeteries are open to suggestions. And I might also ask if there is any particular information folks would like to see added next to the Linn County pages? Piatt, 85, long a resident of Scio-Shelburn community, but who had resided in Charleston, Missouri the last eight years, passed away at the latter place on July 31, 1961. Born July 4, 1876 in Washington, County, Oregon, he was a son of Ephraim and Eliza Piatt, and they, too resided many years in this area before their deaths. George Piatt was married in Missouri to Cora Blackledge, and they came to Scio, Oregon to make their home. Their home place was two miles northwest of Scio. Mrs. Piatt passed away about 1950. A few years later Mr. Piatt went to Missouri and remained there near a niece of his deceased wife. He maintained a keen interest in occurrences around Scio, and wrote an occasional letter to the local newspaper, The Scio Tribune, which was always pubished herein. Record states that he was a member of the First Christian Church in Charleston, Mo., and of the IOOF and Rebekah lodges in Scio. Funeral service was held in Charleston, and the body was shipped to Oregon and private burial was made Tuesday forenoon this week in Miller Cemetery near Scio, which cemetery was close to his long-time home here. Huston Funeral Home of Lebanon received only a private burial directive from an undertaking company in Missouri, and the remains were buried upon its arrival.

    3. This is from Eastman's Newsletter and thought it may be useful to some of you. It is downloadable from the authors web site. The following article is from Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter and is copyright 1999 by Richard W. Eastman. It is re-published here with the permission of the author. ============================================================ - Soundex Calculator for Windows and Macintosh Dave Fessler has released a new Soundex Generator program. It is available in three different versions: MacOS for PowerPC, MacOS for 68K, and Windows 95/98/NT. I used the program briefly this week and found it easy to use. For anyone not familiar with the Soundex system, it is a method of grouping surnames together that sound similar but are spelled differently. In the Federal Soundex Systems, each surname is assigned a code that consists of the first letter of the name. The next three consonants are assigned a number. Vowels are ignored. Soundex has been used to index the 1880, 1900, 1910, and 1920 United States censuses and some other types of records, such as naturalization records and passenger lists. If you know the Soundex Code for your ancestor's surname, you increase the chances of finding him or her in the census indexes. Many genealogy programs also use Soundex to group names together. Dave Fessler's new Soundex Calculator computes three types of Soundex Codes: Federal (as used with the U. S. Census), alternate Federal (alternate coding when H or W is present), and Daitch- Mokotoff. Soundexes may be computed for individual names (typed in) or lists of names (contained in files). Soundex Calculator is available in three versions: MacOS for PowerPC, MacOS for 68K, and Windows 95. All three versions are offered as Shareware. If you like the program you should send $25.00 to the author. Full instructions are included within the program itself. Soundex Calculator can be downloaded from: http://home.att.net/~dfessler ============================================================
