Greetings, Numerous family anecdotes (and at least one newspaper clipping that I cannot currently put my hands on!) inform that my gr-grandfather Frank Tilton Thayer (1861-1945) served as Mayor of Scio at some point. Can anyone help me confirm this story? Thanks in advance, Lisa L. Jones mailto:[email protected]
Hi, Just got the latest Linn County Historical Society's newsletter, and they've had a change in schedule from what I posted yesterday. (Drat - should have waited one more day!) The program scheduled for Sunday, March 12, 2000, which was listed as Richard Chesbrough's "Steamships on the Willamette" has been rescheduled for Sunday, January 21, 2001. The program for Sunday, March 12, 2000, will be "Two-Way Seeing," by Shannon Applegate and Esther Stutzman, descendants of Charlie Applegate and Chief Halo, and will be about relationships between the pioneers and Native Oregonians. Also, I mistakenly listed Jeanne Gentry Robinson as Jeanne Gentry Richardson for the upcoming program Sunday, January 16th, about the Linn County cemeteries. Jan Phillips [email protected]
Hi Lisa, Yes, I've seen other obits in the papers for grange members, and they were always written up very formally in that kind of language. The Herald-Disseminator was a newspaper in Albany - the Weekly Herald Disseminator and you can see the University of Oregon holdings here: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/govdocs/orenewsp2.htm with more information here: http://libweb.uoregon.edu/govdocs/newsproj.htm Oregon Newspapers On Microfilm: The Current Holdings Copies of the Oregon newspapers are available to read in the UO Knight Library Microforms Section. These rolls of microfilm are also available on Inter-Library Loan, and positive microfilm copies may be ordered of any titles with the source code "ONMP". For further infomation, contact the Microforms Section at (541) 346-3080. It looks like they have copies of the Herald Disseminator from Nov 5, 1886 to Sep 15, 1904. The Albany Public Library might also have these issues on microfilm - you can call the reference desk at 541-917-7582. I've just posted this obituary for my gr-gr-grandfather to the LinnCo Query board. It is one of several examples of obituaries I have located in family papers that was posted by Grange members. Can anyone tell me if this was a common Grange style: Whereas, be it resolved, etc? Has anyone come across other such obituaries? Secondly, can anyone tell me more about the newspaper mentioned below, the HERALD-DISSEMINATOR? Thanks in advance, Lisa L. Jones mailto:[email protected] [Obituary of Fairfax Smith Thayer, b. 11 Jan 1834, died 27 Nov. 1886, buried at Mt. Hi, I have a ton of older queries that have been posted in the past to the old Linn County Query Board. I'd like to repost them on the new Linn County Query Board. Are any of the members of this list some of you who might have posted queries? And if so, may I have your permission to copy them to the new query board? The more exposure your queries get, the better the chance of a response... Please contact me, Jan Phillips [email protected]
Judi's not subscribed to the list, but I've forwarded her query. Please respond to Judi at [email protected] if you have information. FYI - Both RootsWeb and the server The American Local History Network are on might possibly have problems. Please be aware of this and expect difficulties with links that do not work. This also goes for the site the Lebanon Genealogical Society sits on. Better to be safe and turn off a server than be sorry and leave it on. Hi M'lisa, Abiram Breeden died 5 Mar 1882 and is buried in the Liberty Cemetery, Sweet Home, Linn Co. This data from Dick Milligan. According to the State Archives, death records were not recorded until 1903, so I doubt if you'd find a copy of his death record. Hope this helps a little, Jan Phillips [email protected] __________ Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 09:15:51 +0000 From: "M'Lisa Whitney" <[email protected]>, <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: [ORLINN] Bush Creek Cemetery? Hello to the Linn Co. researchers -- I'm hoping someone can answer a couple questions for me. 1) I am looking for the name of a cemetery where the brother of an ancestor was buried. Last known residence for Abiram Breeden was Bush Creek in Linn Co. (per 1880 census). He died in 1882 and I would assume he was buried at a nearby cemetery. Which cemetery would this be? 2) I have a copy of his probate papers, but am looking for a copy of his death record in the hope that his parents are listed. Were death records kept as early as 1882? If so, who specifically would I write to request a copy of this? Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this for me. Regards, M'Lisa in Suffolk, England
