Major d'oh! on my part for asking about the death certificate information. If I had gone back through some of my previous mail, I would have realized that I should check with the state archives. Now, speaking of the archives, I did a search on their Information Locator and found two instances of the surname I'm researching. Apparently there is a record of my g-g-g-grandmother being at the Hawthorne Asylum. I have no idea what this place is. Could anyone shed some light on it? The date it lists for her being there is the same year she died, so I'm quite curious. I'd send a request to the archives, but I've already sent one regarding the other name and don't want to wear out my welcome too soon. Cheryl Smith
Apparently Oregon did not start collecting death certificates until 1903. I am in need of finding a death certificate for my g-g-grandfather who died in 1902 in the Halsey area at a young age. Where should I look or to whom should I inquire? Thank you! Cheryl Smith

Rick, Check out the Linn County USGenWeb Surname Board - someone else is researching Notts: http://www.usgennet.org/~orlinnco/webbbs/surnames/index.cgi?read=111 Posted By: La Velle Nott <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, 26 March 2000, at 7:45:08 p.m. 1900 census shows Cary Nott and Wife Maggie living with Elizabeth Nott in Rock Creek Dist of Linn County. Looking for information on location of Rock Creek Dist and the Nott's. I looked at the taxpayers roll for 1892 and they are not there then. Anyone else researching these names? Jan Phillips [email protected]
Hi Rick, Linn County records available at the Oregon State Archives indicate death records were not required by the state of Oregon until 1903. A complete listing of records is here: http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/county/cplinndescrip.html The 1900 Linn Co. census, Rock Creek Precinct, shows: House 5 Nott, Nathan L., b. 1854, age 46, farmer, single, b. IL, father b. IL, mother b. IL [Note: This name could be Wott, it's difficult to tell] House 27 Nott, Cary C., b. 1871, age 29, married 4 years, farmer, b. MO, father b. IL, mother b. IL Maggie B., wife, b. 1871, age 28, dressmaker, b. KS, father b. IN, mother b. KY Elizabeth R., mother, b. 1831, age 68, widow, b. IL, father b. VA, mother b. KY There are no families named Nott or Knott in the 1905 Linn Co. census, not do I find the family in the 1910 Linn Co. census. I don't see any Notts listed in any Linn County cemetery. A quick email to the Oregon State Archives Reference Dept. might turn up something - perhaps they have older death records even if the county was not required to keep them. you can email [email protected] and they will look through their records. Perhaps they have land records or something else which can help you. More info on the Archives reference unit here: http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/reference.html. Anyone else out there have any resources to look through for Rick's Notts? Hi Debbie, How about you list what you know - names, birth dates or death dates - I cannot search through all of the Linn County marriage records looking for Sylvesters without a possible range of dates - Sylvesters are like Smiths around here! <grin> Jan At 07:56 PM 3/8/2000 -0800, you wrote: > >Yes Hi, Thanks for getting back to me.
