    1. [ORLINN] 2000 Census Form
    2. Michelle A. Day
    3. How many of you were lucky enough to get the short form to fill out that was due April 1, 2000? Well I was one of the lucky ones -- so I thought. Beware, the Census Bureau is remailing out census forms randomly that are the LONG form. Now why on earth do I have to fill out 2 -- yes 2 -- census forms? Shouldn't that be illegal? Well the man I lived with called the bureau after he received it in the mail today and told them where they could shove it. They informed him that it will be a $500 fine and someone will come to the house if we fail to fill out that form. Where is there a law you fill out the census form twice and could be fined if you don't fill out the second one? Now I am wondering which ones will be on the census study when we can obtain them in 70 or so years. The bureau also told him we need to fill it out for federal monies. He told them "What federal monies? We don't get any federal monies here." -- only ones I can think of where it goes is the politian pockets or on some wasted project like studying cow farts. The letter from the Director of US Census Bureau reads: Please take about 40 minutes of your time to assist your community greatly by completing and mailing back your copy of this survey as required by law..... This survey is a supplementary Census 2000 survey designed to improve future censuses. --- a supplementary designed to improve future censuses? How about this.. they stop wasting money sending out a letter to inform you that you are getting the census, then receiving the first census, then six months later notifying you that there is a supplementary census coming because we were chosen (lucky us) and then sending out the new census. How much money was wasted in postage and printing costs that could go build a homeless shelter or repair some of those pot hole ridden streets? Allow me to explain: In addition to improving the census, this survey will provide a timely, accurate pool of facts about your community. It is a picture you and organizations you work with can use to help make decisions that affect the daily life of you and your neighbors. -- Will this survey decrease my property taxes? no way And if they need to know what the community is like, why do we have something called the Auditors office where we pay Real Estate Taxes where they have the name of every person, every detail of where they are living and every size and use of piece of land in the entire county. Why don't they just get the information from them? They now more about my house then I do. Why bug me!! LOL That's why your response is of critical importance. >From new highways, to public and private programs for children, senior residents, and economic success, there are so many ways that this survey can enhance the quality of life for your town. -- If they wanted to increase the quality of life then my little tiny bungalow would be worth a few hundred thousand dollars, I would be a millionaire debt free, there wouldn't be snot nosed kids in my neighborhood who vandalize everything they see and have no respect for anything. Why is there always tax levies on the ballot to increase these very same services that census reporting is suppose to help? I want to know who is conning who here. I could go on and on but this is rediculous. I am going to take advantage of something missing out of this letter.. a due date!! Now they can play on MY time because I have none to fill out this stupid census AGAIN!! How many of those people who didn't fill out the first census got fined $500.. I bet very little next to none. What are they going to do to me? Fine me for not filling out two census reports. Please. I think there needs to be a federal investigation and an audit of how much was spent on this stupid census!! Off my soap box now.. LOL Michelle

    3. The help of several wonderful people on this list led me to information about my great-grandmother, Charity Noble Marks. I just found a photo on the web of her grave site, which has been preserved and cared for in the Willamette National Forest! She died in childbirth on the Santiam Wagon Road in 1875. If anyone else is interested, here is the site: http://www.sweet-home.or.us/forest/gravesite/index.html I am still looking for the birthplace and birth date of my grandfather (her son), George Alfred Marks, born 1874 or 1875 in the Willamette Valley. Thanks again, Marilyn S. Chelan, WA

    3. Does anyone have easy access to the 1860 Linn County Census? I'd like to see what's listed for the "Noble" name indexed on page 30. I'm trying to find the birthplace/parentage of my great-grandmother, Charity Noble. I suspect she may be the daughter of a William & Sarah Noble who homesteaded near Sweet Home, Oregon. Their land patent is in the township adjacent to the land patent of Bluford and Martha (Moore) Marks, parents of my great-grandfather James P. Marks, Charity's husband. Bluford and Martha arrived via the Oregon Trail from Missouri, with 7 children, registering at the Umatilla station September 21, 1853. Also, on the Sweet Home map I see a Marks Ridge, Marks Ridge Road and Marks Ridge Drive, which run through the original land patent of Bluford Brookins Marks. Does anyone from Sweet Home know anything about this family? Thanks! Marilyn S. Chelan, WA

    1. [ORLINN] suspicious attachment
    2. To the list, I received an attachment today that I deleted immediately (without opening of course). It may have been ligit, but I did not know the sender, so out it went. I wanted to warn the list in case it is a new form of that resume attachment. It was from [email protected], all it said was recruiting.doc (or something similar) I deleted it so fast I forgot to write the exact words down. The letter itself had no explaination as to what the attachment contained (another reason for my suspicion). Now it could have been a college or some tech school for my daughter, but I would think they would have some sort of explanation to to mention the schools name somwhere in the letter and/or atttachment. I suppose it also could have been a spam type thing, you know... lose 40 lbs in just 2 days... I just wanted to put out a warning just in case. Ahealy PS I sent a letter to the sender telling them I do not allow attachments from persons I do not know.... The letter just came back, undeliverable.

    1. [ORLINN] Jerome Gentry OBIT
    2. Jane Hutchings
    3. In Memoriam Jerome Gentry was born in Anderson Co TN. Oct 11, 1865 and died at the home of his parents near Lebanon OR, Oct 2, 1894. He was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gentry who with their family emigrated on OR in 1874. During the summer of 1892 while with a threshing crew he contracted a severe cold which settled on his lungs, and developed into consumption, of which he died. A year ago his parents sent him on a visit to his old home in TN, hoping that a change of climate would benefit him, but he gradually weaken and was brought home by his father last August. Rome was always a good boy and a geneal favorite with everybody. While away on his last trip he witnessed the baptism of his cousins, which together with the service, made a deep impression on him and brought him under conviction. His life seemed changed from this on, for he often spoke of the hope he had of the life beyond. He was a most patient sufferer--gentle and uncomplaning, doing everything he was bidden without a murmur. He was very found of music and one day said,"If they have lots of music in Heaven, there's where I want to go." As the end drew near he called the sorrowing family about him and calmly bid them all good bye, getting a promise from each one that they would all meet him in Heaven. Later he seemed to suffer a good deal, and whispered, "Ask the Lord to take me tonight," then soon he passed away to be forever with the Lord. "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." C.H.H. ***************************************************************** I'm sorry I do not know were he is buried.

    1. [ORLINN] Fruit *FYI* A girl Kills a Cougar
    2. Jane Hutchings
    3. I hope this is of some interest to someone who is doing Fruit research. **************************************************************************** ****** I found this artical in the Oct 1894 Lebanon Express this afternoon and I thought it was a good one. Times have not changed very much regarding Cougars. A GIRL KILLS A COUGAR A Crowfordsville correspondent of the Brownsville Times furnishes the particulars of the killing of a very large cougar by Miss Etta Fruit. Miss Fruit and her sister live alone on a homestead about two miles above Crawfodsville, and have been annoyed considerably of late with all kinds of varmints. A few days ago a hog imprisoned in a small pen set up an unmerciful yell and Miss Fruit suspecting something wrong, secured a gun and started out to make an investigation. She soon discovered the fact that a large cougar was endeavoring to make way with her porker, but a well directed shot laid the theiving animal out thus ridding the community of one of its worst pests. Miss Fruite differs from the majority of her sex inasmuch as she does not take fright at the mere mention of a mouse. ************************************************************ Acording to the 1880 Linn Co OR census I found the following family and I think Viletta is Etta. Fruit, Peleg 48 HH Martha 40 wife Martin P. 16 Son Sarah E. 19 Dau Thomas 13 Son William 11 Son Jasper 9 son Viney J. 7 dau Viletta 5 dau Frank 1 son On the 1870 Linn co Census there is list a David H. 11 who is not list on the 1880 census list. On the 1905 Linn Co Census there is a Matilda 22 and Charles 20 that are on listed on the 1880 census list. M.P. Fruit m. Emma Michael 9 Jan 1890 Linn Co OR William Fruit m. Addie M. Michael 04 Nov 1896 Linn co OR and is listed on the 1905 Linn Co Census. V.J. Fruit m. G. W. Mackey 10 Nov 1892 Charles C. Fruit m. Gladys Mackey 26 Dec 1917 Linn co OR I did not find any marriage listing for the other Fruit children.
