Rodney Roy Helms, U.S. Air Force, retired, 90, of Waldport, Ore., died of natural causes Feb. 26, 2010 at Sea Aire Assisted Living in Yachats. He was born Dec. 24, 1919 to Charles Helms and Christina Sief Helms in Seattle, Wash. He attended college for two years and also took numerous military courses. He was in the U.S. Air Force and was a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft 1-Germany during the last 18 months of World War II. He was stationed at various U.S. bases and in Okinawa, France and Germany before retiring in 1964. He was a member of the 384th Bomb Group (H) 8th Air Force. He operated a liquor store near Lake Oswego and then a store in Waldport. He loved to travel, and over his lifetime, he visited 80 countries and took 70 cruises. He also enjoyed scuba diving, bowling, fishing and golfing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Lois Helms, and his brother, Charles Helms. He is survived by his stepdaughter, Carol Ann (David) Crawford of Illinois; two step-grandchildren, Cheryl Reinhardt and Mark Crawford; and three step great-grandchildren, Adam and Noah Reinhardt and Anna M. Crawford. A private interment took place March 12 at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718. Affordable Burial and Cremation in Newport is handling arrangements. Note: "Yachats" is pronounced "Ya-hots".
