He was born Dec. 18, 1965 to Wes Schmit and Kayleen (Roemmich) Schmit in Portland. He attended Sherwood High School. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1983 to 1993. He worked as a motor transport operator in Desert Storm. He received the Kuwait Liberation Medal, SW Asia Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He loved serving his country, and he served nine years in Germany. He enjoyed spending time with his family and his dogs, camping, watching movies and country dancing. He was a country dance instructor while stationed in Germany. He also enjoyed working on his house and property, and being outdoors and watching his children's sports activities. He also loved fixing computers and designing web pages, and he owned Wizbones PC Computer Repair in Stayton. He is survived by his partner of 10 years, Mary Free of Lyons; his father Wes (Shanna) Schmit of Seal Rock; mother Kayleen Schmit of Tualatin; daughter Jasmine Schmit of Ellensburg, Wash.; son Nicholas Schmit of Lyons; brother John Schmit of Tualatin, and grandfather Albert Roemmich of California. Memorial donations may be made to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 510 NE Harney St., Newport OR, 97365. A memorial service with full military honors will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.
