He was born on Jan. 27, 1925 to George and Mary Matthews in Indianola, Neb. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 and then was called back to duty during the Korean Conflict. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952 with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany. He met the love of his life, Mary Wellman, while working for Pacific Northwest Bell in Portland, and they were married on Aug. 22, 1959 in Sunnyside. He retired in 1984 after 38 years with US West Communications. In 1985, he and Mary moved from Oregon City to Newport, where they enjoyed gardening and visits from their family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mary Matthews of Newport; daughters, Connie Sponseller of Aloha, Ore., and Doni Lenz of Newport; son William Mayjor of Las Vegas; brother George Matthews of North Platte, Neb.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A private inurnment will be at a later date at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements.
