He was 88. Born Dec. 7, 1921, in Elma, Wash., Dan moved with his father, mother and older brother to Portland, where his younger sister was born. He lost his father at the age of 16 to a brain tumor. To help his mother and younger sister, Dan left school and entered the Civilian Conservation Corps and eventually joined his brother in the U.S. Army. During his time in the Army, Dan was a member of an infantry company in Italy and Tunisia, he worked as a rifleman and then a clerk after the death of his brother, who was burned to death saving his men from a fuel tank explosion. After leaving the Army, he married and started his family, having two boys, Brent and Jeff, and two girls, Terrill and Lorrie. The marriage ended, but he found love again and married Norma "Thorn" Nolf, whom he spent the next 52 years with. They had three children, Vicky, Robert and Steven. After Dan retired, their love of fishing on the Siletz River brought them to Lincoln City, where he lived until his death. Dan is survived by his wife, Norma Gallup; daughters Vicky Schroeder, Terrill Boers and Lorrie Hardin; sons Robert, Steven, Brent and Jeff Gallup; and sister Jane Maschewski. Services have been held.
