He was born Sept. 4, 1921 to George DeBritz and Christine (Askheim) DeBritz in Seattle, Wash. In 1940, he graduated from Garfield High School in Seattle, and in 1971, he moved to Newport. He retired from the Hatfield Marine Science Center in 1986 and commercial fished for a few years. He loved walking the beach with his dog, Dancer. His hobbies were fishing and growing tomatoes. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Christine DeBritz; brothers, Ted and George Jr.; and sisters, Mae Allbright and Norma Hearth. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Leila DeBritz of Newport; sons, Steven (Janet) Woodbury of Beaver, Ore., Howard DeBritz Jr. of Eugene, Ore., Gene (Karen) Woodbury of Portland, Ore. and Bob Woodbury of Portland; his brother, Roy DeBritz of Seattle and Eleanor Schaefer of Seattle; grandchildren, Shane, Crystal, Christopher, Michael, RaeAnne, Cody, Breanna and Josie; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service date and time is pending. Memorial donations may be made to a local humane society. Twin Oaks Funeral Home in Albany, Ore. is handling arrangements.
