His mother was an Oneida of Wisconsin Indian and his father a professional musician who traveled frequently. Other than a few short periods of time he was raised on the Iler family farm 14 miles north of Pipestone, by his grandmother, Bertha Iler, uncle and aunt, Ronald and Eloise Iler, and was raised as one of the family along with his cousins. He graduated from nearby Verdi High School in 1952. In 1953 he enlisted in the U.S. Army and after basic training and radio operator school served in Korea until 1955 when he received an honorable discharge with the rank of staff sergeant. After a short visit home he moved to El Monte in Southern California, where he met and married his wife of 58 years, Ileta Elaine Downing Iler. At the time both were working for Bank of America at the El Monte branch. During most of the 19 years in So. California he worked in the supermarket industry, and after 7 years was promoted to store manager and spent 10 years in that position. During that period of time he attended night school for 9 years and in 1974 received his BA degree from Cal-State University, Long Beach. Later in 1974 the family moved to Reno, Nevada where he was employed by the Prudential Insurance Company as an agent. After two vacation trips to Southeast Alaska in 1985 and 1986 Hal and Ileta decided they would like to live in Juneau to enjoy the beauty, the wildlife, and of course, the fishing. In early 1987 they moved to Juneau where he continued his career with Prudential. Both he and Ileta enjoyed fishing for salmon and halibut on their boat while living there. He was a member of Rotary, the American Legion, and a life member of the Mt. Juneau-Gastineaux Masonic Lodge in Juneau. After both Hal and Ileta retired they decided to move back to Oregon where Ileta was born and raised. March of 2005 they moved to the Oregon coast where they have continued their retirement. Harold is survived by his wife, Ileta, son, David Iler, and daughter, Kathleen Galau as well as grandson, Patrick Iler, granddaughter, Ileta Galau, and great-grandsons Patrick Douglas Iler, and Oliver Tonsgard. Funeral services will be at 10 A.M. Sunday, April 14, 2013 at the Bateman Funeral Home Chapel with visitation beginning one hour prior to service. Bateman Funeral Home is caring for the family.
