She spent her early childhood in the Astoria, Knappa area before moving to Pilot Rock, OR at age 10. She grew up in the Pilot Rock with her parents Warren and Mamie and her brother Gerald, and surrounded by other McGowan families in the local area. She worked in Gail Marie McGowan Arnold's, the family's dry good store during her school years from October 23, 1933 ~ March 5, 2013 (Note: These dates are as they appeared in the paper and are inconsistent with the remainder of the obituary)...until she graduated from Pilot Rock High School and went on to Oregon State. After Graduating at Oregon State, Gail began teaching in Stayton. It was in Stayton where she has rented a room from Albert and Myrtle Arnold. Through that, she met and later married their son Bob Arnold who was back from serving in the US Navy and attending Oregon State. Gail was happy to be a June Bride, and she and Bob were married for 55 years. They had two children, JoAnne and John who both live in the Portland area, and four grandchildren. Gail spent the majority of her teaching career as a Home Economics teacher at McNary High School in Keizer. She loved teaching and working with kids and enjoyed being a 4-H Foods Leader as well. Gail was also active in the Keizer Community Church for many years as their organist. For many, many years, Gail and Bob loved to take the family on camping/fishing trips around Oregon and up to Canada with longtime friends who eventually dubbed themselves The USA Fishing Team. This tradition continued even after the kids were grown and out of the house. After Bob and Gail retired, they bought a 5th wheel and took off for Arizona during the cold and wet Oregon winters and loved to take group tours and cruises to various places in the US and abroad. They enjoyed wintering in Arizona so much they bought a permanent park-model home in Yuma, AZ where they had many "snowbird" friends to spend winters with. Shortly after retirement Gail and Bob also moved to Yachats where they have lived ever since. Both Gail and Bob were involved in many local club and volunteer opportunities. Gail's favorite was the sewing club with her good friends from the Yachats and Waldport area. Gail was preceded in death by her brother Gerald McGowan. A memorial service will be held at The Yachats Community Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 9th at 2:00 PM followed by a private burial at Willamette National Cemetery the following week. In Gail's memory, contributions can be made to Young Life. Note: "Yachats" is pronounced "Ya-hots". Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
