He was born Nov. 15, 1919 to Burl and Lena Gainer in Freewater, Ore. He grew up mostly in Portland, and graduated from Franklin High School. He spent time on a family farm in Tangent during those years, as well. He joined the Navy in January 1942 and served aboard the USS Swanson in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres during World War II until the war ended in 1945. He married Alice Angstead-Kolden in July 1949 in Lincoln City. In 1954, they moved from Seaside to Waldport, where he worked at Mills Hometown Hardware until 1968. He then worked for Weyerhaeuser Co. in Tacoma, Wash. until he retired. He and Alice returned to Waldport in 1998. He was a current member of Masonic Lodge No. 85 in Newport, and a 50-year past master of the Masonic Lodge in Waldport. He was a long-time member of the Community United Presbyterian Church of Waldport. He loved big band music and doing crosswords. But, his real enjoyment came from battling a nice silver on light tackle off the beach in the Alsea Bay, or hooking a great cutthroat at the end of a light tippet in his favorite local fishing spot. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Gainer, and by his daughter, Anna. He is survived by his son, Bruce (Bernice Barnett) Gainer of Waldport; son-in-law Ray Ayers of Puyallup, Wash.; grandsons, Brent (Marie) Gainer, Jeremy Gainer of Waldport, Anthony Gainer of Portland, Christopher Ayers of Puyallup, Wash.; granddaughters, Katie (Matt) Tyree of Orting, Wash., Kaycie (Steve) Wood of Auburn, Wash., Karalyn Castagnola of Milwaukie, Ore., and Darci Greenhill of Kailua-Kona, Hawaii; seven great-grandchildren and a niece. There will be an informal gathering of friends and family at the Gainer residence in Waldport on Sunday, May 30. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
