He was born June 5, 1934 to Robert "Red" and Ruth Shermer in South Beach, Ore., as the fourth generation on the central Oregon coast. He graduated from Newport High School in 1952 and lived in Newport his entire life. He was a logger for 15 years before owning Pacific Distributors, a successful beer and wine distributorship serving Lincoln County, until he "retired" in the early 1980s and formed Bill Shermer Construction. Until 2004, he and his crew built many quality homes and commercial buildings throughout Newport, including his signature blue warehouses. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, card playing, and his family property in Granite, Ore. where he eventually built a cabin. Known for his gruff personality and sense of humor, he was also an avid reader, history buff and traveler. He had a camera wherever he went, along with his faithful canine companion, Ted. He was recognized as a long-time supporter of the Boosters for Newport High School, where he enjoyed seeing his grandchildren attend and graduate. He was also a long-time member of the Masonic Temple and Elks Club of Newport. He enjoyed a lifetime of friendships that he cherished and considered part of his inner circle. Those who knew him would say he would give you the shirt off his back once you earned his respect through hard work and loyalty. He is survived by two daughters, Sheryl Whetzell of Toledo, Ore. and Angie (Guy Pforsich) Shermer of Bend, Ore.; his former wife, Gerry Shermer of Newport; grandchildren, Bill Whetzell of Bend, Andrea Whetzell of Eugene, Ore. and Cory Pforsich of Bend. There is no service per his request. Memorial donations may be made to a local hospice of one's choice. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements.
