She was born May 15, 1921 to John D. Parker and Edith B. (Wanke) Parker in Oregon City, Ore. She lived in Newport for the past 60 years. She received an associate degree in home economics at Oregon State University, and in 1944, she became one of the few women in Oregon to acquire a pilot's license. She was active in the community, earning "Woman of the Year" in 1960 from the Newport Business and Professional Women. She was an avid golfer and held several offices in the Agate Beach Ladies Golf Association. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi in Newport. Some of her other interests included her family, duplicate bridge, and traveling. She was also a voracious reader. She worked at the Banner-Courier Newspaper in Oregon City as a society editor. After moving to Newport, she wrote a column for the Newport News-Times called "Max's Misc." She is survived by her daughters, Sandi (Frank) LaRoche and Bev Updenkelder; and son, Doug (Shirley) Updenkelder, all of Newport; grandchildren, Bob LaRoche, Tim LaRoche, Andrea Cohn, David McClellan, Kate Mason, Jenni Bregman and Matt Updenkelder; and 11 great-grandchildren. There are no services per her request at this time, however, there will be a celebration of life for her family and friends at a future date. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements.
