He was born Sept. 30, 1946 to Casey and Kay (Hughes) McCarter in Albuquerque, N.M. He lived in Newport for the majority of his life. He left his mark on many landmarks of this community such as the Undersea Gardens, Wax Museum and many other places he worked as a certified welder. He also designed and helped build the Pepsi Challenger, for nationwide tractor pulls. Other accomplishments include recycling and working in forestry. He owned and operated Herb's Welding and began Thompson's Recycling. He enjoyed building race cars, antique cars and outdoor activities. He was preceded in death by his parents, Casey and Kay McCarter, and son, Herbert Dale McCarter Jr. He is survived by his daughters, Wendy Lee Smith McCarter of Portland, Ore. and Brandie Sue McCarter of Wyoming; siblings, Wes Bristol of Magnolia, Calif., Vonnie Luts of Minnesota and Gene Olson of San Jose, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 16, at the Yaquina Bay Yacht Club, 750 SE Bay Blvd. in Newport. A reception with light refreshments will follow.
