She was born Oct. 19, 1924 to George D. Miller and Lena M. Ellsworth Miller in La Cygne, Kan. She grew up in rural Kansas, and after her high school graduation in 1942, she moved to Los Angeles to work with the Santa Fe Railroad during World War II. There she met Valteen Jones, who was on shore leave with the U.S. Navy. They were married in Bremerton, Wash. on March 31, 1945. Before moving to Newport, Lola made many friends across the state as part of the Oregon Parks Department, in which her husband was employed. Homes in Oregon included several years in Tillamook, La Grande, Salem, and Coos Bay. She and Valteen moved to the South Beach area in 1993. In recent years, she has been a resident at Oceanview Retirement and Assisted Living Center. She was active in OSU Home Extension Home and Community Education and served as a community volunteer with the Newport Chamber of Commerce Visitor's Center and the Newport Public Library. She was a member of the First Baptist Church. Her needlework crafts won awards at the county fair and remain with many friends and family members as keepsakes. She was preceded in death by her parents, George D. Miller and Lena M. Ellsworth Miller; and her husband, Valteen M. Jones. She is survived by daughter, Joyce Kirk of Brentwood, Calif.; son, Michael (Spike) Jones of Seal Rock, Ore.; son-in-law, Tim Kirk; daughter-in-law, Carolyn Jones; sisters, Fern and Beulah; brothers, Kenneth and Daune, and sister-in-law Romalee, all of Kansas; five grandchildren, Kolby Kirk of Arcadia, Calif., Kasandra Kirk Magliulo of Fremont, Calif.; Callie Jones Scranton of Ridgefield, Wash.; Kelsey Jones Boyd of Gresham, Ore.; Valerie Jones Ells of Burien, Wash.; and four great-grandchildren. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements. No service is planned. Memorial donations may be made to the Newport Public Library Foundation where a memorial bench will be placed in memory of Lola and Valteen Jones.
