She was born June 13, 1922 to Henry and Margie Grable in Corning, Calif. As a young girl, she moved to Salem with her parents. She graduated from Salem High School in 1936 at the age of 16, having skipped the third and eighth grades. After high school, she went to work for Douglas McKay Chevrolet auto dealership. She then worked for Sears Roebuck and Company for several years before securing employment with the State of Oregon. She worked for many state agencies, including the department of agriculture, department of human resources, the revenue department and the department of transportation. She was well liked and considered an excellent employee everywhere she worked. She married Henry "Hank" Hess on Dec. 5, 1959, and they recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They retired from active employment in 1977 and moved to Waldport, where they bought a home on the Alsea River in 1982. They enjoyed many years of traveling around the northwest visiting family and friends. One of her most memorable trips was to Australia and New Zealand, where they made many lifelong friends. She enjoyed their years of raising registered quarter horses, watching her husband catch fish on the Alsea River and tending to her large family of hummingbirds. She enjoyed knitting slippers for family and friends, and they loved getting her handmade dishcloths. She enjoyed preparing meals for friends and family, including delicious homemade pies. She was preceded in death by her two brothers.
