Ellsworth, 84, of Depoe Bay, Ore., died of cancer on Oct. 8, 2010 at his home. He was born June 21, 1926 to McKinley Ellsworth and Marie (Provost) Ellsworth in Deer Island, Ore. He grew up in Northwest Portland's slab town and then moved to St. Helens, where he attended high school and worked in the shipyards. During World War II, he enlisted in the Air Force and served as a staff sergeant in the occupation of Japan. He was an artist and a self-starter. After his apprenticeship with the outdoor advertising company C.E. Stevens, and later Foster & Keiser, he went on to establish North Pacific Sign and Design in 1965, which he managed with the help of his wife, Marti (Martha Funk), and four sons. After retiring to Depoe Bay in 1991, he and his wife became active volunteers in the community. In 2002, Marti preceded him in death, just shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. She was the grounding force in his life and her departure was a blow, but he collected his strength and with the love of family and friends rallied to continue on enjoying life to its fullest. He will be missed by his "second family," David and Beverly Fenske and their children Tavis and Elisa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marti; brother, Russell; and sister, Patricia Snyder. He is survived by his sister, Colleen Petrina; four sons, Douglas (Pauline), Curtis (Barbara), Bradley (Korin), Cameron (Tracy); grandchildren, Marie, Isaac, Kyle, Trevor and Haley; and many nieces and nephews. Memorial donations may be made to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospice, 3100 NE 28th St., Lincoln City, OR 97367. Affordable Burial and Cremation is handling arrangements.
