Bowers III, 64, of Florence, Ore., died of cancer on Sept. 12, 2010. He was born Feb. 22, 1946. He came to Oregon from the East Coast in the late '60s driving a VW microbus, and he settled with family and friends in Eugene, where he was a dedicated founder and member of the Eugene Growers Market. A trip to the coast convinced him to stay where the forest meets the ocean, and he managed Gull Haven Lodge for a short period. Not long after, Jim settled in Yachats, where he resided for more than 30 years. During his time in Lincoln County he worked for the Lincoln County School District, the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. He volunteered for an array of wildlife projects under the auspices of just about every state, federal and nonprofit program in the area. In later years, he started his own business, taking visitors to the Yachats area on guided nature walks. He was well versed in botany, zoology, geology and physics and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with everyone. He is survived by his wife, Jessica; daughters, Catlin and Gwen; sister, Jane of Eugene; brother, Pete of South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held in Yachats on Feb. 22, 2011. The location will be announced at a later date. Burns's Riverside Chapel Florence Funeral Home in Florence is handling arrangements.
