Clark, 72, of Waldport, Ore., died of cancer on Aug. 9, 2010 at his home. He was born Dec. 16, 1937 to John Clark and Madeline "Madge" Collignon Clark in Natrona Heights, Pa. He attended grade school in Natrona Heights. Later, he graduated with a bachelor's degree at St. Vincent College and earned his master's degree in physics at the Colorado School of Mines. He was an aeronautical engineer, computer scientist and mathematical physicist with an impressive resume. He held many titles and contracts with several large corporations during his career, such as Allied Signal Avionics, Boeing, Rockwell Collins, General Electric, Technisource and Hercules Chem, just to name a few. He officially retired from Rockwell in 2003 but continued contracting with them through October of 2004. During his career, he developed, tested and analyzed nationally used display systems for weather and aircraft. He developed, tested and analyzed software and computer systems. He performed nuclear criticality experiments, wrote diffusion-transport prediction programs and tests for the Nuclear Safety facility. He and his wife, Carol Ann, were project/team leaders in Poland, teaching conversational English to a wide population, which included school children, domestic staff, employees of government, railroad, fire department, and others. They resided at Reymontowka Retreat Center for Artists and Scientists for the duration of their commitment from 1992 to 2000. In his younger years, Herc played football for the Pittsburgh Steelers as a fullback. He was married to Patricia Donnel, circa 1960 in Pennsylvania. In April of 1984, he married Carol Ann Friges in Topanga Canyon, Calif. Since moving to Waldport in 1996, he was a teacher and tutor at the Seashore Family Literacy Center in Waldport, teaching both math and GED students. He was the chair of Depressed Anonymous 12-step program, a member of the Bayshore Clubhouse, Spiritual Movie Cinemas, Ocean Unity Church in Newport and past president of the Kiwanis club. He loved science and teaching. He loved the ocean, traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Madeline Clark and his grandfather, Jeeps Culligan. He is survived by his wife, Carol Ann Friges of Waldport; children, Mark (Candy) Rocheleau of Seal Rock, Laura (Jerry) Pederson of Spokane, Erik Clark, Jocelyn Clark and Shane Clark; brothers, Patrick, Tony, Kevin, Brian and Charlie Clark; sisters, Eve and Jean Clark and Cherie Clark-Foos; and one grandchild. A celebration of life, potluck dinner and spiritual cinema movies for all will be at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, at the Bayshore Clubhouse in Waldport.
