He was born May 24, 1930 to Ross and Bessie (Clark) Swancutt in Riceville, Iowa. "Red" grew up in Riceville, Iowa, the youngest of six siblings. In 1948, he graduated from Riceville High School. He married Beverly, the love of his life, on June 29, 1951. They lived in Riceville when their first son, David Wayne, was born. They moved to Northwood, Iowa in 1954, where they had their second son, Steven Jay. He and Bev lost an infant son, Neil, in 1956. They returned to Riceville where he purchased and ran the Riceville Locker. Their fourth child, Melissa, was born in 1960 in Riceville. He was a master butcher, skilled in meat processing and sausage making. After years owning the locker, he became the proprietor of Murphy's Tavern. In 1985, he and Bev moved to Oregon. They retired to Newport in 2002. For 15 years, he managed Safe-Lock Storage in South Beach. He was a member of the L.O.O.M. (Moose) Lodge 2238 and the Salmon River Athletic Club and greatly enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Bessie Swancutt; his son, Neil; sisters, Doris Beine and Hazel Pubaldi; and brothers, Dale Swancutt and William Swancutt. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Beverly Swancutt of Newport; son, David (Kerri) Swancutt of Riceville, Iowa; son, Steven (Susan) Swancutt of Manly, Iowa; daughter, Melissa Swancutt of Newport; sister, Jean (Swancutt) Park of Junction City; and seven grandchildren. Services will be held in Oregon and Iowa. Dates will be announced. Memorial donations may be made, in lieu of flowers, to a charity of one's choice.
