Author: marysday Surnames: Quade, O'Della, Minkler, Werner, Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.oregon.counties.lincoln/5276/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The News Guard Lincoln City, OR Feb. 24, 2010 Paul Quade Paul Leonard Quade of Kenai, Alaska, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010, at Central Peninsula General Hospital after a long three-year battle with Melanoma cancer. He was 61. Paul was born May 30, 1948, in Oregon City to Theodore and O'Della Quade, the day of the Vanport flood. His family moved to Wecoma Beach, now Lincoln City, where Paul was raised along with four brothers and three sisters. Paul received medical care from the Veteran's Administration in the final months of his life after serving in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam War. In 1988 Paul graduated from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, with top honors in architectural studies. In 1990 Paul graduated with the same Summa Cum Laude honors at UAA, Soldotna, with petroleum technology degrees. He developed, patented and sold his invention, "Handy Tape" to Sailor Pen Corp. of Japan. In 1998, Paul discovered kicksleds from Scandinavia. He purchased sleds from Finland and Norway for his family. His love of the sport later developed into an import business, AlaskaSparken. Paul hosted several "Peninsula Winter Games" kicksled races, henceforth renamed, The Paul Quade Memorial Kicksled Races. A genuine highlight in Paul's life was an article about him, kicksleds and racing, profiled by Associated Press writer Dan Joling, that was picked by many newspapers around the U.S. in the spring of 2004. He died holding hands with his best friend of 21 years, Jared Minkler. Teresa Werner, his former wife of 20 years and mother of his children, was attentive to his needs during the months preceding his death. He had only kind words for the VA. His sense of humor was sometimes misunderstood, however, he was easily able to see his own faults and find humor in them. Paul is survived by Werner; children Wesley Wade-Theodore, Wyatt Will-Simon and Hetta O'Della-Susan Quade, all of Kenai; sisters and brothers, Andrea Zimmerman of Yuma, Ariz., Neil Quade of Lincoln City, Harlan Quade of Newport, Arthur Quade of Rose Lodge, Brian Quade of Waldport, and Janice Erickson of Swisshome, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Della, sister Joanne Quade, sister-in-law, Dina, and niece, Susan Quade. Private services will be held at a later date. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 1544 Kenai, AK 99611 and P.O. Box 235 Swisshome, OR 97480. Arrangements were made by Peninsula Memorial Chapel in Kenai.
