He was born Sept. 10, 1942 to Clifford Lee Gates and Dorothy Keithley in Santa Ana, Calif. He graduated from Taft High School in 1960. He received his mechanical engineering degree at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo in 1965. He married Susan in Santa Ana, Calif. on Nov. 10, 1962. In 1974, he moved back to Oregon with his family to join his father and brother at Groth-Gates Sheet Metal. He bought Bay Sheet Metal in Newport in 1990 and opened Northwest Industrial Sheet Metal in Albany in 1996. He reinstated his pilot's license and began restoring vintage airplanes. He was a member of Airline Owners and Pilots Association and Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors' National Association. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, and they enjoyed meals together on any occasion possible. He also enjoyed playing a friendly game of cards. He had an infectious laugh and an incredible smile. He lived his life by the Ten Commandments and Glen Beck's Nine Principals and Twelve Values. He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford Lee Gates. He is survived by his wife, Susan Gates of Corvallis; his mother, Dorothy Keithley of Lincoln City; sons, Thomas Gates of Albany, Ore. and Johnny (Bobbe) Gates of Jefferson, Ore.; daughter, Lisa (Lindsay) Brakel of Haines, Ore.; brother, Clinton (Janet) Gates of Lincoln City; sisters, LaRena (Dick) Davis of Lincoln City, Charlotte (Mark) Oliver of Enumclaw, Wash., and Teri (Randy) Sawyer of Lincoln City; and grandchildren, Mandi and Nolan Gates of Newport, Karsen and Jagen Gates of Jefferson, Ore., and Payton Brakel of Haines, Ore. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at Linn County Fair Grounds Expo Center in Albany, Ore. A Flyby and reception will follow.
