He was born May 19, 1916 to Alonzo and Olive Stam in Faribault, Minn. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a World War II Victory Medal. On March 14, 1936 he married his sweetheart, Jean Eloise Howe, in Faribault. He had several careers during his lifetime. He worked as a licensed electrician at Minneapolis Moleen in Minnesota, a bootlegger, an electroplater and a construction worker on the Alaskan Highway. He also worked for the federal government with the housing project in Siletz, and was a deputy for the City of Siletz. Most recently, he was known for his pop can collecting and attendance at garage sales in Siletz. He was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Siletz. He and his wife of 65 years, Jean Eloise, were foster parents for more than 50 children over the years. He worked tirelessly to raise money to build the Siletz Fire Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Olive Stam; his wife, Jean; sons, Rodger, Michael and Gary; daughter, Judith; sisters, Harriet and Ellen; and his brother, Grant. He is survived by his daughters, Betty Springer of Reedsport, Ore. and Sharon Reid of Siletz; brother, Herb Stam of Faribault, Minn.; sisters, Rose "Sis" of Minnesota, and Lucille "Teeny" of California; 10 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation is from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 30, at Bateman Funeral Home, 915 NE Yaquina Heights Dr., in Newport. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Church of Christ, 423 East Logsden Road in Siletz. A private interment will take place Monday, Feb. 1, at the Eureka Cemetery in Newport. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either hospice or the Siletz Fire Hall. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements.
