He was born Sept. 7, 1940 to Rudolph and Janet Haffner in Sabetha, Kan. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University and a Master's Degree in education from University of Oregon. He taught mathematics for 36 years, two years in Roseburg and 34 years in the Eugene School District. He married Mary Rutherford in Eugene on August 23, 1964. He was a member of the Church of God 7th Day, enjoyed woodworking in his shop, singing with the Coastal Aires and truly enjoyed John Deere tractors. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Haffner; sons, Chris Haffner of Eugene and Greg Haffner of Veneta; daughter, Tammi Johnson of Eugene; sisters, Dorothy Stroupe of Haines City, Fla. and Marie Roberts of Eugene; granddaughters, Natalie, Courtney, Caylin; and grandsons, Dalton, Chase, Cardin and Kyler. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 19 and Feb. 21 at Bateman Funeral Home, 915 NE Yaquina Heights Dr. in Newport. A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. on March 5 at Yachats Community Presbyterian Church. Private interment will be held at the Yachats Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Yachats Fire Department c/o South Lincoln County Ambulance, P.O. Box 32, Yachats, OR 97498.
