McCoy Bertha F. McCoy, 98, of Newport, Ore., died Jan. 14, 2010. She was born on Jan. 20, 1911 to George and Tessa Roach in Alliance, Neb. Her paternal family immigrated to America in 1770 from County Cork, Ireland, and her mother was a member of the Lakota Sioux Nation, Oglala Tribe. She graduated from high school in Alliance and then moved to California to build and own The Gateway Lodge and The Sequoia Cider Mill, both in Three Rivers, Calif., from 1951 through 1982. She married Mervin C. McCoy in San Mateo, Calif. in 1939, until she was widowed in 1995. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Siletz and a member of The Order of the Eastern Star, Lucerne Chapter in California. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Mervin C. McCoy; five brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by sisters, Opal Horn of Keizer, Ore. and Velda Kinate, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; five nieces, Linda Palmer of Newport, Vickie Lander of Keizer, Sharon Pembrook of Laguna Hills, Calif., Elsie Roach of Pioneer, Calif. and Diana Horn of Aumsville, Ore.; nephew Ron Horn of Palmetto, Fla.; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. A graveside service will be held in Visalia, Calif. on Feb. 6, where she will be laid to rest with her husband in the Visalia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Mid-Coast Christian School, 1811 NE Arcadia Dr. in Toledo. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements.
