Arriving in 1956, he was the fifth of seven children born to Roger and Loretta Smith and resided in Newport for most of his life. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and cousin. Jim was fiercely loyal, full of energy and had a unique sense of humor that could have you laughing until tears rolled down your face. He had a tender heart and lived life to the fullest. His mind was wildly creative. He wrote songs, played guitar and created paintings incorporating the most unexpected objects. Next to Jim's family and his countless diverse friends, surfing is what he loved most. His first encounter with a surfboard occurred when he was about twelve and he was hooked. With his signature long blonde curly hair he became the picture of the typical California surfer. And although he rode the waves of Southern California, Hawaii and Costa Rica, he was most often found in the chilly waters of Oregon's Agate Beach. Jim was a nonconformist who followed his dreams with a passion. He left us with unique and special memories.his bright light will never fade and there will never be another "Jimbo." Jim was preceded in death by his father Roger and older brother Mike and is survived by his mother Loretta and siblings Nancy, Diane, Jan, Gloria and Brian. Loretta and her family wish to express their deepest thanks to all who shared warm thoughts of Jim and offered support to our family.
