She was born March 17, 1957 to Walter W. (Bill) and Glenna E. (Gist) Affolter in Salem, Ore. She was a graduate of West Albany High School in 1975 and Oregon State University in 1979, where she received a bachelor of science degree in business. While in college, Heidi was president of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. After graduation, she was employed as an insurance agent, ultimately specializing in commercial property and casualty insurance. She began her career with United States Fidelity and Guaranty and SAIF. She then spent approximately 15 years with Fred S. James and its successor, Sedgwick James, in Salem, Ore., until the company was sold and its Salem office was closed. She then worked for Hagen Hamilton Insurance Agency in McMinnville, from 1998 until her cancer forced her early retirement. She held a professional designation of C.P.C.U. Her employers and co-workers describe her as having tremendous technical knowledge, a great personality, and being trusted, admired, and respected by her clients. Her greatest joy in life was the birth of her son, John F. Huggins, in 1993, and her most important goal was surviving to see him graduate from high school, which she achieved. John entered OSU this fall, majoring in mechanical engineering. Heidi was a devout Christian throughout her life. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and a volunteer at the Union Gospel Mission, both in Salem, for many years, and served in the Stevens Ministry. She was also an avid Beaver fan, holding season tickets for OSU football. She loved traveling, golf, scuba diving, snow and water skiing, and watching sports on television, especially the Beavers, Packers, Seahawks, and anything golf. She loved the family beach house in Neskowin and her dogs. She remained close friends with her Alpha Delta Pi sorority sisters long after college, and they were a constant help and support. She is survived by her son, John F. Huggins, of Corvallis; sister, Carey (Cliff) Collard, of Newport; brother, Chris Affolter, of Fall City, Wash.; nieces, Jaime (Justin) Perryman of Newport, Kelly (Ryan) Thomas of Hillsboro, and Amy Moore of Albany; and five grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at First Church of the Nazarene, 1550 Market St. NE in Salem, followed by a celebration of life at the Red Lion Hotel, 3301 Market St. NE in Salem. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society for cancer research. Affordable Burial and Cremation is handling arrangements.
