He was born July 27, 1919 to Fred and Gertrude (Watkins) Armington in Des Moines, Iowa. Following graduation from Old North High School in Des Moines, Ken joined the Iowa National Guard and then entered the Army in World War II. He served four years in the European Sector. He was honorably discharged and followed his fiancée, Vera Marie Bennett, to Newport, Ore. where she moved with her family. Ken and Vera were married in Newport's Presbyterian Church. Although they never had children of their own, Ken and Vera were foster parents for 16 years. Ken was a route salesman for Lincoln Dairy in Toledo for 33 years. He built his own home on NE Eads in Newport. Unfortunately, Vera passed away before she could enjoy their home. Ken married Carol Oleman in 1964. They had four daughters and were host parents to three different students from Japan. Ken was a friend to many and enjoyed belonging to several organizations in the community where he could socialize with others. He was a member of the First Christian Church, a 25-year member of the American Legion Post 116, the Newport Boosters, and met a group of friends every weekday morning for coffee. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Gertrude Armington; brothers, Fred Jr., Raymond and Donald; and sister, Dorothy. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Carol; daughters, Margaret Joyce (Raf Schneph), Beth (Frank) Traversi, Susan Grace, and Teri Uktena; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at the First Christian Church, 809 SE 2nd in Newport, across the street from Yaquina View School. Bateman Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
