He was born Sept. 1, 1961 to William Peter Borgman and Martha Lee Smith Borgman, in Astoria, Ore. Matthew graduated from Ferris High School in Spokane, Wash. He married his high school sweetheart, Shelly, and went on to earn an associates degree in general studies from Spokane Community College. He divorced and later married Tammy. During his varied work career, he served as an officer at a juvenile detention center, worked in the insurance field, was a long-haul truck driver, enjoyed a stint as a crab processor on board a ship in the Bering Sea, and was self-employed as a car hauler. When he was a long-haul driver on I-5, he did so with the help of his faithful companion, "Salem," and his mother, Martha, often talked with him on the phone to ensure he stayed awake on all those long trips. His great-grandfather, Captain Peter Borgman, was a ships master of the old wooden sailing ships where his grandfather, William, was born on the ship. So Matthew had the same love for the sea as his grandparents. Matthew loved running everywhere he went as a child, and his love of speed continued into adulthood as he raced dirt bikes, motorcycles, and stock cars. He loved people and could be counted on to help anyone who was stranded on the side of the road or to give a hitchhiker a lift if needed. He often brought folks home to stay with him if they had nowhere else to go. He is survived by his parents, William and Martha Borgman, of Waldport; his first wife, Shelly; former wife, Tammy; siblings, Leanne, Dennis and Amanda; seven nieces; and three nephews. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Community Presbyterian Church of Waldport, located at Highway 34 and Bay Street. Memorial donations may be made to South Lincoln Resources. Affordable Burial and Cremation is handling arrangements. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
