She was born Aug. 7, 1964 to Carl Thomas Boylen, MD and the late Lois Boylen-Cota, MD in New Orleans, La. She spent most of her childhood in Point Dume, Malibu, Calif., where she graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1982. She obtained B.A. degrees from University of California, Santa Barbara in environmental studies and aquatic biology in 2002, and a B.S. in microbiology from Oregon State University in 2005, where she also completed course work for an M.S. in microbiology. She worked for NOAA - Fisheries Environmental Conservation Division at the Newport Field Station in Newport in several capacities since 2002, most recently as a research microbiologist. From 1993 through 1999, she was an environment scientist for Carson Dorn Inc., and Montgomery Watson Laboratories in Juneau, Alaska. A master diver, she worked as an environmental consultant and scientific research diver since 1996, and was part of the research team for the Antarctic Research Program through the U.S. Department of Navy and the National Science Foundation in 1989. In 1993, she and her future husband, Ted Morales, followed their dreams and drove their Volkswagen to Juneau, where they started their careers and enjoyed many fine adventures together. In 2005, she and Ted established a heritage farm in Toledo, where they raise horses, fiber and meat goats, turkeys, chickens and small crop plants. Inspired as a girl by "Little House on the Prairie," she began mastering many traditional skills, including baking, preserving and canning, crafts such as sewing, and home brewing and animal husbandry. She continued the Boylen family tradition of amassing a sizeable library. She especially loved her Morgan horses and looked forward to the day that she and her husband would have matching paint horses. Their paint mare foaled just before the onset of her short illness. She will be remembered by the many friends she collected over the years, all inspired by her laugh, the sparkle in her eyes, not to mention her sassy attitude, and her enduring kindness and friendship. She is survived by her husband, Maurice Theodore Morales; father, Tom Boylen of Malibu; brother Kevin Boylen of Nairobi, Kenya; aunt Vera Piper of Winchester, Va.; nieces Tamu, Deborah and Vera Boylen and sister-in-law Tissi Boylen all of Newport. Affordable Burial and Cremation in Newport is handling arrangements. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
