He was born April 6, 1916 to Ernest and Wanda Cook at Soap Creek near Corvallis, Ore. He attended high school in Portland and two years at Oregon State University. During World War II, he served with the Geodets, a mapping division attached to the Flying Tigers. He was stationed in British Guinea and China. He was a past district governor of the Lions Club International. He attended the Order of the Antelope for more than 50 years and was a past Chief Whitetail. He never met a stranger, and he always had a good story to tell. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Wanda Cook; brother, Richard; and grandson, Travis Linsay. He is survived by his wife, Estle; daughters, Susan, Sally, Sandra, and Sharon; sons, Ronald and Thomas Smith; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A memorial wake was held at his home in Yachats on Saturday July 31. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Order of the Antelope scholarship fund or the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.
