Mitchell, 77, of Newport, Ore., died in an automobile accident on June 3, 2010. He was born Oct. 4, 1932. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Arizona State University. He taught elementary, middle, high school and college courses in his career. After retiring in 1991 from Waldport Middle School, he and his wife, Nancy, spent many hours volunteering at schools, church, hospice and Habitat for Humanity. A celebration of life for Jack Mitchell will be at 4 p.m., Monday, Aug. 30, at the Newport First Presbyterian Church, 227 NE 12th St. This is an opportunity for all who knew Jack to honor and celebrate his many accomplishments and contributions to the community. Following the celebration, there will be a Mexican dinner and a chance to visit with family and friends. On June 3, Jack and Nancy were involved in a motor vehicle accident south of Monmouth that took his life. Nancy was severely injured in the accident and has been recovering at the Dallas Rehabilitation Center. She has transitioned back to her home in Newport, and is now ready to meet with the many people who have supported her throughout her recovery and who want to honor Jack. One of Jack's passions was to support the Newport co-ed middle and high school pole-vaulting teams, coached by John Ball. He liked to support the young athletes who compete mostly against themselves, always trying to achieve a "personal best," and perhaps placing in the top tier of a meet. The family asks that donations in Jack's honor be made to the NHS Track Program. Donations may be designated toward scholarships to help students with the participation fees for track, or to the pole-vaulting equipment fund. Donations may be made to NHS Booster Club, Track and Field Scholarships or Pole-Vaulting Fund, P.O. Box 2216, Newport, OR, 97365. Use the memo line on the check to designate what the donation is for. Anyone interested in helping with the celebration by bringing food for the Mexican dinner, or by contributing to the program, should call or e-mail Mark and Cindy McConnell at 541-270-1313 or [email protected] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
