He was born Nov. 13, 1922 to Samuel and Thelma (Ford) Cribbs in Portland. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in Portland, spent time in the Navy during World War II and graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 1951. He had a cafe in the Taft area of Lincoln City in the 1940s with his wife, Cleo Tate, and started his family. He lived in the Lincoln City area thereafter, with a few years back in Portland, but he always loved the coast and returned. "Sam the Milkman" had the Tillamook Dairy route along the "20 Miracle Miles" for years and enjoyed, with his children working by his side, his interactions with his many associates along the route. He spent many years actively involved in the school system when his children attended the Lincoln City schools. He was also involved in various positions with community government, including the police commission, the Jaycees, city council, and later as the mayor of Lincoln City. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Thelma Cribbs, and his sister, Miriam Francis. He is survived by his five children, Jacklyn Oswald of Portland, Samuel (Linda) Cribbs III of San Diego, Boyd (Susan) Cribbs of Dallas, Patricia (Paul) Yancey of Prineville and Richard (Angela) Cribbs of Portland; and 10 grandchildren. He thoroughly enjoyed the last years of his life with Zela Rutledge of Gleneden Beach. Memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospice or the North Lincoln County Historical Museum. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Bateman Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
