She was born Jan. 6, 1955 in Port Chester, N.Y. She grew up in Waldwick, N.J., where she graduated from high school and was the drum majorette for the high school band. Later, she graduated from the University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, in Syracuse, N.Y., with a B.A. in landscape architecture. This was a 5-year program, where the fifth year was spent in Chile helping to design a national park. She also played baritone saxophone in the Syracuse Marching Band, and was in a sorority. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service in Libby, Mont., and left that position when hired by the City of Great Falls as their landscape planner. She also did private landscape design. For years, she worked in the local school kitchens, but most recently she was a teacher's aide and mentor with the Aspire Program at Newport High School. She married Eugene J. Hogan Jr. on Oct. 3, 1981 in Campville, N.Y. Her hobbies included gardening, music, working with fused glass, arranging flowers, camping, boogie-boarding and cooking. She loved animals and the ocean. Volunteer activities included Girl Scout leader (she also landscaped the Girl Scout Hut in Newport), mentor in the Aspire Program at Newport High School, Grad Night Committee, Lincoln County Park Board, and K-9 Krusaders. She was a loving wife and mother, and a dedicated and supportive "Sports Mom" for all her daughters' sporting events. She was preceded in death by her parents, Constance Brewster Laing, and Daniel Frederick Gerster. She is survived by her husband, Eugene Hogan of Newport; daughters Katrina Lee Hogan of Newport and Kelly Nichole Hogan of Newport; and brother, Daniel Andrew Gerster of Oshkosh, Wis. A short visitation for close family and friends will be prior to the service being held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, at the Atonement Lutheran Church, 2315 N. Coast Highway in Newport. Cremation will follow. Bateman Funeral Home in Newport is handling arrangements. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
