He was born Oct. 6, 1945 to Mitchell and Anita (Kotchuk) Petterson in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada. He was raised in Portland and attended Benson High School and Clark College. He served in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969 as an air traffic control tower chief, stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. He began his electronics career at Western Electric Co. Later, he chose to become a commercial roofer working for Buckaroo Roofing and ABC Roofing, serving on the union board, before moving to the Oregon coast. He followed that with self-employment as a commercial roofing consultant and was proud of his contract work for the Mentor Graphics headquarters building in Wilsonville. He retired from roofing to work in property management. He married Carol Calkin on Dec. 15, 1985. Together, they managed several properties, including The Highlands in Gearhart, Little Whale Cove in Depoe Bay, 150 rental homes for Tenly Company in the Salem/Keizer area, and Little Creek Cove Condominiums in Newport. He was a member of the American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed fishing, cooking, golf, poker and cribbage. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mitchell and Anita Petterson. He is survived by his wife, Carol Petterson of Newport; son, Don Jay; sisters, Sharon (Paul) Crawford of Gresham, Janice (David) Stanwood of Gresham and Darlene (Gary Sr.) St. John of Rockaway; and several nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #2817, 106 E. Olive St., Newport OR 97365.
