Phelps, 84, of Otis, Ore., died at her home on Nov. 10, 2010 after a year-long battle with cancer. She was born May 27, 1926 to Edward and Hetta Walls in Stanton, N.D., the seventh of 10 children. She graduated from high school in Big Fork, Minn. She moved to Seattle, Wash. and graduated from Providence Hospital School of Nursing in June 1948. She married Gayton Phelps in June 1948 in a double ring ceremony with his brother Doc (Leland) and Joyce Phelps. They built their home on the Old Scenic Highway 101 in Otis and raised six children on their farm managing both cows and trees. Besides being a busy mom, she enjoyed her work as a nurse in Lincoln City and for the Lincoln County Health Department. She was very active with her family and had numerous community activities. The Lincoln County Small Woodlands Association voted her the Tree Farmer of the Year award in 1995. She had great business sense and used it in her tree forestry management. She loved to cruise her property in her truck on all the logging roads to check on the growth of the newly planted trees and plan the next cuttings. She enjoyed sports. She was active in intramural sports in college and loved being a spectator watching her children and grandchildren compete in football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, track, baseball and softball. She also faithfully watched the Beavers, Ducks, Trail Blazers, Mariners and her favorite NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings. She loved playing cards and was an avid bridge player that looked forward to her weekly bridge group at the Lincoln Community Center. She loved the friends at bridge group and enjoyed the social activities right through the month of October. Her favorite family card game was pinochle. She looked forward to the Phelps Family Reunion every year. Spending time with family was very important and special to her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gayton; daughter, Beverly; and grandson, Shawn. She is survived by her children, Dennis (Mary Jo), Pamela (Paul), Becky, Josie, Don (Sue), and David (Kristie); sisters, Evelyn, Lorriane and Virginia; 14 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. on Nov. 27 at the Otis Fire Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of one's choice.
