He was born Aug. 14, 1928 in Junction City, the only son of Guy and Coval Hinton Hansen. Raised on his family's farm, he was a member and lifelong supporter of 4-H. As a young man, he won numerous West Coast awards for his sheep husbandry. He graduated from Junction City High School in 1945, and had recently attended his 65th class reunion. He was a full-time farmer for more than 15 years, raising turkeys, pigs, sheep, horses and chickens, and growing hay and vegetables. On that multi-generational, self-sustaining farm, he learned how to fix just about everything. He was a resourceful man who took pride in finding solutions and making the best of what he had. He joined the Lane County Sheriff's Department in 1961 as a deputy sheriff. After he retired in 1981, with the rank of lieutenant, he moved to the Lincoln City area with his wife, Bonnie. He had worked part-time for Salishan Leaseholders, Inc., for the past 23 years. He was a member of the K-9 Krusaders, and participated in Bow Wow at the Sea. He was an avid bowler who also loved baseball and "those Mariners." On almost any day, he could be found helping his daughter and son-in-law at their Lincoln City hotel, the Historic Anchor Inn. His family remembers him as a man with a diverse set of friends, even when he was a cop. He respected everyone, regardless of their station in life. He loved his children and grandchildren, and he was happiest when his family was together. He leaves behind his dogs, Keila and Dilbert, that he loved with all his heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie. He is survived by children, Doug (Zale Nagler) Hansen of Eugene, Deana (Kevin) Whitten of Central Point, Grant Hansen of Medford, Kandi (Kip Ward) Hansen of Rose Lodge, Michele (Charlie) Tindall of St. Helens, and Rick (Dan Beck) Brissette of Lincoln City; sister, Yvonne Leahy of Eugene; and grandchildren Ryan Hansen, Melanie Hansen, Chase Whitten, Chad Whitten, Tatiana Tindall and Kesha Tindall. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. He will be buried alongside his wife, Bonnie, in the historic cemetery in Franklin, Ore. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to K-9 Krusaders, c/o Sue Giles Green, PO Box 237, Siletz, OR, 97380.
