He was born Sept. 1, 1930 to Llewellyn D. and Marie I. Jerro Giffen in Englemine, Calif. He lived in California until moving to Bandon in the early 1930s. He married Diane Agnes Linton May 31, 1951 in Grand Ronde. He was drafted into the Army in 1951, trained at Camp Roberts in California and was stationed in Okinawa, where he was part of the military police. He returned to live in Klamath Falls, where he attended Oregon Technical Institute receiving training in commercial and domestic refrigeration. For 46 years, he and Diane made their home in Waldport, where they owned and operated Giffen Refrigeration and Appliance and Western Auto Store. He was an active member of the community and was involved with the Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, American Legion and the VFW. He was a member of the Yachats volunteer fire department and was also a director for the Pioneer Telephone Co-operative for 16 years. He was a member of the Catholic Church. In 2002, Sheridan became their home. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hunting and fishing. He loved little children and animals, as well as pulling a good joke on someone. He was preceded in death by his parents, Llewellyn and Marie Giffen; and brother, Jack Giffen Sr. He is survived by his wife, Diane Giffen, of Sheridan; daughter, Debbie Marrington of Sheridan and Brookings; sisters, Ione Moore of Dallas and Virginia Thoreson of Roseville, Calif.; stepsister, Carol Fulkerson of San Francisco; grandson Sean O' Leary; great-grandson Nathaniel Borgen; and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. A viewing was held Oct. 26, with a recitation of the rosary in the Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the Grand Ronde Tribal Gym. Interment will follow in the Grand Ronde Tribal Cemetery. An online memorial book is available at www.dallastribute.com. Dallas Mortuary Tribute Center in Dallas is handling arrangements.
