She was born May 6, 1925 to Bernard and Bessie Chambers in Hillsdale, Wis. She and her brother, Bud, grew up on a dairy farm. She graduated from Barron High School in 1943. She received her teacher's certificate from Normal School in Rice Lake, Wis. and taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Prairie Farm for five years. She moved to Newport in 1950 and taught at Toledo and Eddyville schools until 1973. She married Tom Tompkins in 1957, and they resided near Eddyville. Together they raised three sons on the family farm. She enjoyed her family, flower gardening, hummingbirds and the occasional trip to the casino. She will be remembered for the way she welcomed everyone into her home with coffee and a good meal. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard and Bessie Chambers; husband, Tom Tompkins; and brother, Charles 'Bud' Chambers. She is survived by her sons, Bruce (Karen) of Eddyville, Tim (Kathy) of Dallas, Ore. and James (Peter) of Minneapolis, Minn.; and grandchildren, Brent (Sidony) Tompkins, Valerie (Kristian) Rennert, Jenna Tompkins, Jeff Tompkins, Sybil Dunlap and Josh Dunlap. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 12, at McHenry Funeral Home in Corvallis, followed by a celebration of life at Stoneybrook Clubhouse, 4700 SW Hollyhock Circle, Corvallis. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
