He was born Dec. 13, 1924 to Bertie Jiles Carver and Alta Gentry Carver in Altoona, Kan. When times were tough, the family moved from Kansas to Oregon. He worked briefly at Snyder's Market in Toledo before enlisting in the Navy for World War II. They lined up all the recruits and asked those who had not been to boot camp to step forward. He stepped forward, and when they asked him why he had not been to boot camp, he said they knew a good man when they saw one. He was immediately placed on the USS California. Elsie Southwell became good friends with Lloyd's sister, Millie, while he was in the Navy. One Halloween, Elsie and a friend dressed up and went out to the Carvers to surprise Millie. Lloyd, who was home on leave, opened the door. The surprised girls took off running, and he chased Elsie until he caught her and kissed her. He proposed after a couple dates, but she gave no answer as he was not a Christian at the time. In 1946, he was discharged from the Navy, and made a commitment to the Lord. He and Elsie were married Dec. 5, 1947 in the Methodist Church in Toledo, and were married for 62 years at the time of his death. He worked for C.D. Johnson Lumber before borrowing $300 from his father-in-law, Howard, to start Lloyd's Auto Service in August 1948. He was a service station business owner for more than 50 years in Toledo. He was an honest, hard-working businessman amidst 11 other gas stations at one time in Toledo. The station is currently owned by his son, Steve. In 1960, he moved his family to Pioneer Mountain, where he lived until his death. The family enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing trips and trips back to Kansas. He was a World War II vet serving on USS California, a member of Newport Nazarene Church, a member of Gideons International, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #732, American Legion Post #116, Lincoln County Mounted Posse Assn., and a lifetime member of USS California Association. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elsie Carver; sons Lonnie (Dawn) Carver of Albany and Steven (Leslie) Carver of Eddyville; foster son, Steve (Dorothy) Atkinson, of Gresham; daughter, LloyDene (Dave) Westmark of Tillamook; sisters, Mildred Marsh of Springfield and Doris Douglas of Chanute, Kan.; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Church of the Nazarene in Newport. Memorial donations may be made to hospice and the Gideon's Bible Society.
