She was 87. Patricia was born Patricia Sue Durst to Thelma (Saling) and Rodney Durst in Portland on Nov. 3, 1922. Her parents divorced when she was a toddler and she went to live with her mother and maternal grandparents in Pendleton. When her mother died in a car wreck when "Patsy" was about 7, she continued to live with her grandparents and attended St. Joseph's Academy Catholic School. During her childhood and early teens in Pendleton, her colorful grandparents cared lovingly for Patsy and provided her with an interesting upbringing. Her grandfather, a former rodeo cowboy, created bathtub gin and her grandmother sold homemade potato chips door-to-door. Pat told stories of listening to partying cowboys downstairs in the Victorian house on Thompson Hill while lying in her feather bed, trying to keep warm in the unheated upstairs, and of painting "stockings" on her legs to go to school so the nuns wouldn't know she couldn't afford real ones. Her grandmother later bought a pool hall in Echo, where Patsy finished off the eighth grade. As a teenager, she moved to Portland to live with her father. They shared a small apartment on West Park Avenue. She attended Lincoln High School, graduating at age 16 in 1939. She then attended Northwestern Business College. She worked as a secretary for several years afterward. In 1943, she married Charles Schannep, the father of her only child, Mary. During their marriage, they ran a jewelry store in Gresham and she worked at Reynolds Metals Corp. They divorced in 1961. Her second husband was Carl Hanshew, an independent truck driver. Carl died in 1969. In 1970, she married Sam Danna, part owner of Garden Products. Sam's Sicilian father had a horse-drawn fruit and vegetable wagon. Sam carried on the Italian green grocer tradition by becoming a meat cutter, operating a small grocery store on S.E. 82nd Avenue, and later operating Garden Products. In 1975, Pat and Sam retired to Lincoln City, where they thoroughly enjoyed their oceanfront home at Roads End. Both were avid golfers, beachcombers, travelers and card players, especially bridge and cribbage. They were also active at St. Augustine Catholic Church. In 1990, they moved to a new home they had built in Indian Shores, where they made many good friends. Sam died in 1999 at the age of 83. She was desolate over his loss, but after a couple of years was consoled by one of Sam's golfing buddies, Don Fentress, who remained her helper, friend and companion until his death in July 2009. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Steve Heileson of Sherwood and grandsons Thomas (Karen) of Washington D.C. and Brian of Seattle. A memorial mass will be held at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 1139 U.S. Highway 101, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the church. There will be a private entombment at Portland Memorial Mausoleum. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
