He was born March 10, 1929 to William and Annabelle Cherry in Havre, Mont. He spent his youth in the Yakima Valley. His career as a millwright took him to Albany, Ore., Newport, Ore., Arcata, Calif.; Clatskanie, Ore. and back to Newport. Upon his return to Newport, he married Beverly J. Case, and they joined their families to make for a total of eight children. Upon retirement in 1990, he and Beverly moved to Crooked River Ranch in eastern Oregon, where they enjoyed the drier climate and spent many hours golfing, became avid gardeners, watched every Western movie ever produced and made plenty of good memories with many friends and family, including his best friend Sammy Bittner. Their door was always open. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Annabelle Cherry; sisters, Dorothy and Corabelle; and brothers Marvin, Donald and Delbert. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Beverly, of The Dalles; daughters, Pamela Docken of Boardman, Cheryl Cherry of Portland, Melanie Ferguson of Georgia, Terri Case of Portland, Denise Baley of Portland, Julianne Duncan of Fairview, Heidi Williams of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Roger Cherry of St. Helens; sisters, Marjorie Millward of Poulsbo, Wash., Evie Behckne of Boise, Idaho; brother Jim of Sequim, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Gorge, 751 Myrtle St., The Dalles, OR 97058. Per his request, there will not be a formal service, however, the family is hosting a celebration of life at noon on Saturday, June 26, at the Sorosis Park in The Dalles.
