He was born Dec. 9, 1940 in Missouri. He spent his early childhood in and around Muskogee, Okla. with his parents. His grandmother, who lived on the Cherokee reservation in Tahlequah, Okla., took care of him for a number of years until he decided to leave the reservation. His early career consisted of jobs as a heavy equipment operator, police officer, electrician, and finally, his last jobs were in the truck-driving field. In 1955, he found the one true love of his life, Martha Case Moody. They spent their days watching old movies and re-runs of classic television shows. Their favorite holiday was Easter, when they would hide eggs around their property for their grandchildren to discover. He always cooked up a big turkey and made all the fixings to celebrate Easter. He was a great handyman; it seemed he could fix anything. He liked making planter boxes and working in the yard. He was a great auto mechanic, too, and helped many people who did not have money to fix their cars professionally. He will also be remembered by family and friends for his cooking. His kitchen was open to anyone who was hungry. Donna Holmes, Chuck Leno, Shawn and Margaret Martin held a special place in his heart. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Case Moody, and son-in-law, Bruce Butler. He is survived by daughters-in-law, Loraine Butler, of Siletz, LaVonne Butler of Siletz and LaVerne Butler of Salem; sons-in-law, Byron Strong of Siletz and Arthur Butler of Lincoln City; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren. A memorial service was held on June 8, 2010 at Affordable Burial and Cremation in Newport. Affordable Burial and Cremation is handling arrangements.
